Evaluate Spending With Your College Student

When most of us think about the holidays, we think of family time together, shopping, decorating and preparing for an out-of-town trip. While these are all holiday considerations, if you’re a college student, or if you’re the parent of a college student, it is also a great time of year to take control of your finances.
Soon, students will return home from the fall semester to spend time with their families. You can use this time with your college student to evaluate student loan status, spending habits and budget effectiveness. This is a great time of year to make any changes that need to be made before the onset of another semester at school.
Student Loans
Now is the best time to refresh your memory of your student loan status. Maybe you took out enough loans for an entire year at the beginning of the fall semester. If you do not have a file set up for your student loans, now is the time to make one. A simple file can store all the information you have received in the mail and online. Also, experts recommend an on-going spreadsheet or document to track loans for each year and their interest rates. This information will be vital upon your student’s graduation for loan consolidation purposes.
Spending Habits
Maybe you ended up sending much more money to your undergrad while they were away at school than you had intended. Perhaps there were unforeseen expenses or perhaps money was spent flippantly. Now is the time to sit down with your undergrad and figure out where all the money went. It is imperative to foster good spending habits because they will enable your college student to manage their own budget.
Budget
Using the information you’ve gathered from the points above, formulate a new budget. Make it realistic because if you make a budget that is nearly impossible to adhere to, then chances are when you go over – you’ll just give up on budgeting altogether. A budget teaches your undergrad sound spending habits and money management skill that will serve well for the rest of his or her life.
